XXX Domains
Domain world has a move an a move that has been seen as a victory and defeat by both sides, the internet overseer Icann has approved the use of a domain for internet pornography websites.
The domain .xxx has been under discussion for a decade and has previously been rejected the after a court case ruled the move illegal, more stringent attempts were made to finalise preparation for its introduction.
There are supporters and critics on both sides of the argument with anti-pornography groups protesting that the introduction of the domain, legitimises the content which often contains violence and degrading acts against women, many of whom are forced into the trade by circumstance or by illegal trafficking.
Many are drugged to ensure their cooperation in the content. Industry spokespeople say that the introduction forces the sites away from the mainstream internet and into an internet ‘ghetto’. No bad thing, say religious groups.
Anti-vice units in police forces across the world say that the move would enable them to monitor the traffic more effectively and would prevent accidental exposure of the young to the material. Furthermore it would make blocking of such sites easier by parents and ISPs being able to block a whole domain.
In a perverse twist to the saga, porn suppliers say they may consider legal action if any restrictions on access to the sites interferes with their businesses and profits.
A recent investigation by Jacqui Smith, a former Labour government minister found that regular access to such sites was a major contribution to real-life abuse of women, caused marriage breakdowns and led to an increase in crimes of a sexual nature. Her involvement came as her husband was caught paying for pornographic movies on MP’s expenses.
There have been calls for tougher action to regulate the sites and it is hoped that this latest development will help make the internet safer for young families.
