Country Walks
There are lots of places to go in the Wakefield and Pontefract area for an aternoon walk and a bit of fresh country air. What a great way to get the children outdoors and enjoy the local wildlife.
Newmillerdam situated in the village of Newmillerdam in Wakefield is one of the most beautiful places to walk in the area, the lake is the perfect platform to base your walk around and not only are the views completeley breathtaking you can also enjoy plenty of wildlife along the way. Amongst the trees squirrels climb and scurry and on the lake the birds and swans gently glide. Walking one of two walks a short walk cutting across the water bridge or a longer walk the whole way round for the more adventurous you will not be dissapointed and you can even cycle the way if you choose. Newmillerdam is perfect all year round.
Fairburn Ings situated at Fairburn village near Castleford is also an ideal way to enjoy walking and meeting the wildlife. There are three trails available each showcasing different types of habitats used by the variety of birds residing at Fairburn Ings. One is a pushchair and wheelchair friendly trail and one is a discovery trail especially aimed at children to aid in helping them learn more about wildlife. Entry is free and donations welcome.
Thornes park in Wakefield is a picturesque backdrop for an afternoon out walking, a lake is situated in the park as well as a rose garden and a childrens playground. A miniture railway operates throughout the summer usually on a weekend and various sports such as tennis, golf and bowls are also available.
Pontefract park situated at the race course is a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon out as there is a walkway which is pushchair and wheelchair friendly taking you round the race course and a childrens playground. The small lake in the centre is perfect for having a stroll around or to just sit and enjoy the view of. The lbirds gently swim and the water gently laps aroubnd the small island in the middle and peddle boats are available for hire during the summer. Golf is also available as is tennis and bowls and there are various sets of goal posts on the fields ideal for a friendly kick about. Many families like to take picnics when the weather permits and the vast open spaces means it never gets too crowded.
